How to work with outside developer

I need some advice. I'm working with a freelancer who is in another country. He is helping build the ecommerce part of my site using php/mysql.

He requested FTP and cPanel access, of which I'm leery, especially cPanel.

What have you who've been in my situation, done in the past? Thoughts or suggestions?

I was thinking of creating a subsite through WHM, with its own cPanel, of which I can access as an Admin and change the cpanel later.

I just don't want them to access my dedicated server's "main" cPanel.

Anybody recommend something or a workflow with the developer?I appreciate any help offered.

I am glad you asked, because the same questions occured to me and I have not ever seen a post that supplies the answers. Looking forward to some illuminating comments.
